SPECIALTY PHARMACY IS GROWING AS A PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL SPEND

Specialty medications are rapidly growing, comprising nearly half of all pharmacy spending. If current trends continue, specialty spend could reach $310 billion by 2030. These medications are expensive, requiring complicated therapies for patients with chronic diseases including cancer, HIV/AIDS, immune disorders, etc.

An accredited specialty pharmacy must have the necessary infrastructure to provide services that include medication monitoring, patient education, and comprehensive treatment assessment.  Health systems and payors must determine careful management strategies to effectively service patients with chronic conditions at a reasonable cost.
